In conjunction
with the 2009 SME Pittsburgh Section and the
Pennsylvania Coal Mining Institute of America (PCMIA)
Joint Venture Meeting in Southpointe, PA, Mr. Layton Binon,
Mr. Ronald Harma, Mr. Donald Nelson, and Mr. William
Gasper were honored for their 50-year membership with SME.
Mr. Layton
“Barney” Binon and his lovely wife Rosemary found time
to attend the SME Annual Business Meeting and was
awarded a plaque from the Pittsburgh Section.
Mr. Binon took a
moment to share with the SME membership his 34-years of
experience in the coal and mining industry and his time
working as a Mining Engineer for North American Coal
Company in North Dakota and Ohio. Mr. Binon has
participated in fascinating engineering projects and
witnessed many safety and production transitions during
his professional endeavors in the mining industry.
Mr. Binon currently
operates his own consulting business, Binon Engineering
in Solon, Ohio (440.248.5229). He has traveled
world-wide reviewing and assisting in all kinds of
mining projects.

Binon receives an honorary plaque for his 50-year SME
membership from Robert P. Kudlawiec (past chair, SME
Pittsburgh Section and President of Maplecreek Mining).
