October 2007 Joint Annual SME/PCMIA Meeting

With a record attendance of 284 including 63 students, the 2007 PCMIA/SME Pittsburgh Section Annual Joint Meeting comprising the 121st Annual Meeting of the Pittsburgh Coal Mining Institute of America, and the 62nd Annual of-the-record meeting of SME Pittsburgh Section, took place at the Hilton Garden Inn Southpointe, Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. With a long history dating back to 1887, PCMIA in con-junction with SME put together a comprehensive program.

Technical Session I, chaired by Joe Sbaffoni, PA DEP, and John Kovac, NIOSH, covered the subject of Mine Emergency Response. This was followed by Technical Session II, chaired by William Bookshar, PA DEP, and Michael A. Trevits, NIOSH on Locating and Mapping of Abandoned Mines. The PCMIA Student Luncheon was moderated by Bill Bookshar, PCMIA President.

Technical Session III was moderated by Heather Freeman, Moody and Associates, Inc., and this cov¬ered University Student and Alumni Activities.

The following day, Technical Session IV was on Panel Discussions on Mine Communication and Mine Sealing. This was chaired by Jim Bryja, Foundation Coal Corporation, Bill Bookshar and Susan B. Bealko, NIOSH. The SME Luncheon was moderated by Robert P. Kudlawiec, Murray Energy Corporation, and Chair of SME Pittsburgh Section. This year, the PCMIA/SME Joint Meeting was held in conjunction with Designing the Coal Preparation Plant of the Future Meeting.

The PCMIA officers comprise William Bookshar, President; Robert Penigar, First Vice President; James Hickman, Second Vice President; Brad Miller, Third Vice President; Jim Bryja, Past President; and Carol Boring, Secretary/Treasurer. The SME Pittsburgh Section officers are Robert P. Kudlawiec, Chairperson; Susan B. Bealko, Treasurer; Peter J. Vaughan, Secretary; and Myron P. Nehrebecki, Past Chairperson. Registration for the meeting was carried out by Mary DelRosso, assisted by Gretchen Horrell, Lisa Krepps, and Janet Blizzard.
